Greg Tassell was born into a farming family in Goudhurst, Kent and was a chorister at Durham Cathedral. He later read music at Exeter University and studied singing at the Royal Academy of Music under Ryland Davies. Whilst at RAM he reached the final of the 2008 London Handel Competition, appeared in masterclasses with the late Robert Tear and most notably performed the premiere of Richard Rodney Bennett’s Lost Songs at the 2008 London Guitar Festival.  He was a young artist for Retrospect Ensemble under Matthew Halls in their series of concerts at the Wigmore Hall in 2008-10 and toured Israel with Purcell’s The Fairy Queen.

Greg continued his operatic training in the chorus of English Touring Opera where he sung the roles of 2nd Priest (Magic Flute), Don Curzio (Figaro), Mr Badger (Fantastic Mr Fox) and Songvendor (Il Tabarro) over three seasons and worked closely with director James Conway and MD Michael Rosewell. Greg also appeared in numerous operas designed for children with Special Needs, most notably The Midnight Moon which will be taken to Luxembourg in June/July 2011 under the direction of Tim Yealland. Appearances for other companies include Albert (Albert Herring) for Co-Opera Co, Jenik (The Bartered Bride) for Surrey Opera, Mercury (Orpheus and the Underworld) for Kentish Opera and Borsa (Rigoletto) for Opera a la Carte. Future operatic engagements include Albert (Albert Herring) for Surrey Opera and Monostatos (Canterbury Garden Opera).

Greg is in great demand as an oratorio singer and recently returned to the London Handel Festival where he performed Messiah in 2010 under Simon Williams and the London Handel Orchestra. Recent highlights have included Messiah for Harrow Choral Soc at St Albans Cathedral under Simon Williams, St John Passion for Counterpoint at Exeter Cathedral, Haydn The Creation at Canterbury Cathedral under David Flood and Handel cantatas for the London Handel Collective. Future oratorio engagements include Handel cantatas for Henley Choral Soc and Yehudi Menuhin School, Haydn Creation for Oxford Spezatti at St James Picadilly, Handel’s Acis & Galatea in Dulwich and Messiahs for Northampton Choral Soc, Petersham Choral Soc and Ledbury Choral Soc. Greg reached the final of the London Bach Competition 2010.

Greg is passionate about English Song and is a trustee of the John Kerr Award for Early English Song, a biennial competition at Finchcocks, Kent. Greg often appears in recital with pianist Gary Branch and future concerts include programmes at Hatchlands in Sussex, Finchcocks and Dorking Surrey.
